Rogers State Falls To Fort Hays State 2-1 In MIAA Spring Tournament

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State women's soccer fell at home to Fort Hays State 2-1 in the opening round of the MIAA Spring Consolation Tournament on Thursday evening at Soldier Field.
 
Highlights
  • Fort Hays would begin the first half with the offensive momentum, as they would have two shots on target in the first four minutes of play.
  • The Hillcats would respond with the next two shots of the contest in the seventh and ninth minute. The first shot from Vanessa Gonzalez was blocked by a Tiger defender and the second shot from Sarah Ovalle was saved in the lower left corner by keeper Deonna Wellbrock.
  • Following a run from Fort Hays State with five shots by the Tigers, the Hillcats responded and controlled much of the remainder of the half.
  • Hailey Gunn would have the shot miss the target and then in the 31st minute, Vanessa Gonzalez had a shot saved in the lower left corner by Wellbrock.
  • Maggie Brown would get the Hillcats on the board with the first goal of the contest in the 39th minute. Brown got on the end of a cross in from the wing and then had to work space at the top of the penalty area before she finessed a shot past the Tiger goalie and defender and find the top of the goal.
  • The final shot of the half came from Hannah Mushisky, who missed the target high and right of the goal.
  • Gonzalez would have the first shot of the second half and nearly doubled the Hillcat lead, but the ball would hit the crossbar.
  • Fort Hays would even the score in the 70th minute after a shot from Reilly Madden snuck past Towle to tie the game.
  • Gonzalez had again another shot saved four minutes later by keeper Megham Groom.
  • However, against the run of play, Jordan Thompson put the Tigers on top with a right footed shot to the lower left of the goal in the 76th minute.
  • The Hillcats would be on the offensive attack the remainder of the contest, as they out shot the Tigers 5-0 in the final 15 minutes. Three efforts reached the target but were saved by Groom, and the remaining two were blocked.

  • Fort Hays State would have five saves from their keeper in the second half.
  • Cambre Towle recorded four saves on the day, while the Tigers had seven between their two goalies.
  • The Tigers edged Rogers State in corner kicks 3-2.
  • Rogers State had 12 fouls to 11 from Fort Hays. The Tigers had two yellow cards to one for the Hillcats.
