Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Newman, Takes MIAA Series

Wichita, Kan. – The Rogers State baseball team split games two and three of the weekend series with MIAA conference opponent Newman University on Sunday at McCarthy Field.
 
GAME ONE
Rogers State 19, Newman 8

How It Happened
  • Rogers State got the scoring rolling early, as they had five runs in the first inning, led by Mason Harvey, who scored the first run of the game after Preston Horn hit an RBI single to left field.
  • Brandon Brandshaw would hit an RBI single to left field as well on the very next at-bat and allowed Brooks Betcher to score the next run. Later in the inning, Horn was able to score from third off of a wild pitch by the Jets.
  • Jonathan Soto hit an RBI on the next at-bat, which allowed for Bradshaw to score. The Hillcats would score their final run of the inning after another wild pitch got away from the catcher to allow Jerry Davis to score the fifth run.
  • In the bottom of the first inning, the Jets would score on a wild pitch to get on the board.
  • The Hillcat would add five more runs in the second inning, starting with Horn adding another RBI single, which allowed Harvey to score an unearned run. In the next at-bat, Bradshaw would add an RBI double to center field to score Horn.
  • After Kyle Simms was walked, Soto added a two RBI double to left field, scoring Bradshaw and Simms. The final run of the second inning came after Victor Ceniceros hit an RBI single to send Soto in for an unearned run.
  • Betcher hit a two RBI home run to left field in the third, sending in Harvey, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
  • The Jets hit a home run of their own in the third inning to score their second run of the game.
  • In the fourth, a sacrifice fly from Ceniceros allowed Simms to score from third.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Jets would hit another home run to score two more runs.
  • Christian Merriwether hit an RBI single to score Bradshaw in the top of the fifth.
  • The Jets added two more runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to eight.
  • However, the Hillcats would answer with four runs in the top of the six, after Horn hit a three-run home run and Bradshaw added a solo home run to left field.
  • The Jets added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • The final Hillcat run came off of an RBI single from Harvey to score Merriwether in the seventh.
Game Notes
  • Horn finished game one 4-for-5 from the plate with five RBI's and three runs.
  • Harvey finished 3-for-5 from the plate with four runs and an RBI.
  • Bradshaw finished 3-for-5 from the plate with four runs and three RBI's.
  • Soto finished 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI's, two walks, and a run scored.
  • Betcher hit his first homerun of the season.
  • Betcher and Ceniceros both had a pair of RBIs.
  • Jordan Ewig picked up his second win of the season with three strikeouts in four innings played.
  • Brent Dickey had four strikeouts in three innings played.
  • Rogers State out hit Newman 18-to-11 in the seven innings played.

How It Happened
  • Harvey would score the opening run of the game after reaching home off of a wild pitch.
  • The Jets took their first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.
  • In the second, Merriwether would tie things up with after scoring off of an RBI single from Ceniceros.
  • Horn added a solo homerun down the left field line to give the Hillcats the lead in the third inning. Later in the third, an RBI double from Simms would allow Jerry Davis to score an unearned run.
  • Soto would hit the second homerun of the inning with a shot to left field, which allowed Simms to score and put RSU up 6-2.
  • Newman would add a run in the bottom of the third.
  • In the fourth, Harvey would score as he took home while Horn was caught stealing second base to give the Hillcats their seventh run of the game.
  • The Jets would narrow the lead to two with a pair of runs in the fourth.
  • Harvey hit an RBI double to right center field, which allowed Ceniceros and Merriwether to score in the sixth inning. Harvey would score later in the inning off of a balk by the Jets.
  • The Jets added three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to cut RSU's lead to 10-8.
  • Soto would score the final Hillcat run of the contest from an RBI double to center field by Ceniceros in the seventh inning.
  • However, a two-run homer from the Jets would bring them within a run of the Hillcats.
  • The Jets would tie the score in the ninth to send the game into extra inning, where they would score the game winner off of a wild pitch.
Game Notes
  • Harvey went 3-for-6 in game two with three runs and two RBI's.
  • Horn went 2-for-4 from the plate with two walks, a run, and an RBI.
  • Ceniceros went 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Soto went 1-for-4 from the plate with two runs and two RBI's.
  • Merriwether went 1-for-3 from the plate with a pair of runs scored.
  • The Hillcats had eight pitchers in two game, as Cory Murphy and C.J. Edwards both led the Hillcats with three strikeouts.
  • Leonardo picked up his first loss of the season.

Rogers State will make the trip to Ada, Oklahoma to take on East Central on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in non-conference play.
