Women's Soccer Falls In Heartbreaker to Northeastern State

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State women's soccer fell to Northeastern State 2-1 Thursday night in MIAA Southeast Division play at Soldier Field.

Highlights
  • The first half was scoreless between the RiverHawks and Hillcats, with Rogers State having the better looks, forcing three saves in the opening 45 minutes, compared to just one shot on goal for Northeastern State.
  • Maggie Brown tested Melanie Rice twice, but the RiverHawks goalkeeper stopped, including a leaping effort to punch one over the crossbar and keep the score level.
  • The Hillcats had the first big chances of the second half, but the Hillcats were unable to generate a shot despite multiple good early looks and a cross in the box that missed several RiverHawks defenders.
  • Northeastern State would take the lead on an opportunistic goal on a counter attack, as Sara Arundell played a cross in from the right wing that caused a collision of several players in the center of the box. Myka Heimbach was able to fight through the collision and poke the loose ball into the net for the opening goal in the 64th minute.
  • In the 83rd minute, Northeastern State capitalized on another counter attack, as Livy Wagner set up Callie Rucker for the second goal of the game, as the RiverHawks doubled their advantage.
  • Rogers State responded immediately off of the kickoff. Sydney Connelly played a ball into Kori Watters from the left wing. Watters tapped it through to Vanessa Gonzalez, who beat Rice in the lower right corner to open the Hillcats scoring less than 20 seconds after the NSU goal.
  • The Hillcats would get one more key chance to tie the game, as Maggie Brown won a penalty after drawing a foul from Heimbach in the box. However, Brown's penalty kick was matched by a diving effort from Rice, who pushed the effort wide and preserve the win for Northeastern State.
