Box Score CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State women's soccer team returned to the win column on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Newman in the MIAA opener at Soldier Field.
With the win, the Hillcats improve to 6-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in MIAA play. Newman drops to 0-5-1 on the year with a 0-1 MIAA record.
Kori Watters gave the Hillcats an early lead in the 34
th minute with her third goal of the season, burying it in the back of the net off a
Vanessa Gonzalez pass that weaved through the Newman defense. With nine minutes to play in the first half, Watters struck again curving the ball into the backside of the net, upper 90, from 25 yards out.
The Hillcats took the two-goal lead into intermission. The Jets battled back in the second half, cutting the RSU lead in half in the 71
st minute off a free kick at the top of the box. Makenzie Shay delivered a shot to the far post out of the reach of RSU goalkeeper
Savannah Harvey.
RSU hung on for the win. Harvey earned the victory in goal with six saves in the match. With two goals on the afternoon, Watters moves into a tie for first in goals scored this season with Gonzales.
Rogers State returns to action Friday, October 1 at 6:00 p.m. in Joplin. Mo., taking on Missouri Southern in MIAA play.
