No. 19 Hillcats Close Out Regular Season With Win Over Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – No. 19 Rogers State men's soccer (9-3-6, 7-1-4 GAC/MIAA) rolled to a 5-0 win on the road over Newman (1-14-3, 1-9-2 GAC/MIAA) to close out the regular season on Saturday.

Five different Hillcats scored in the win. Ruben Carrasco netted his second goal of the season while Grant King and Hugo Martin both scored their third goals and the reigning Co-Offensive Player of the Week George Robinson earned his fourth goal. Marcos Vasallo increased his team lead to six goals on the season. Both Declan Viljoen and Rodrigo Silva were excellent in goal with Viljoen making two saves.

RSU controlled the match from the kickoff. In the opening 45 minutes, they outshot the Jets 5-2 with three shots on target compared to one. Ruben Carrasco wasted no time putting the Hillcats on the board as he found the back of the net with an assist from George Robinson in the eighth minute. Grant King put RSU up 2-0 in the 32nd minute with assists from Robinson and Luke Morgan.

The Hillcat offense cranked up the pressure in the second half as they again outshot Newman 7-2 with five shots on goal compared to one. In the 58th minute, Hugo Martin fired in a shot to push the lead to 3-0 with an assist from King. Four minutes later, Robinson found pay dirt with an assist from Matthew Sweetman to go up 4-0. Marcos Vasallo capped of the scoring in the the 72nd minute to secure the 5-0 win.

RSU will now turn their attention the GAC/MIAA Tournament beginning on Friday, Nov. 4. The Hillcats must wait for the result of the Southern Nazarene vs. Northeastern State match later tonight to learn their seed in the tournament.
