CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (2-6) notched their first two wins of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Colorado Christian (1-6) on Saturday.
GAME ONE - RSU 3, CCU 0
The first game was a true pitcher's duel as both starters work two scoreless frames to open the game. It was the Hillcats who broke the seal in the bottom of the third with two runs to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Jesse Holguin brought across Marcos Barrera and Prescott Horn with two RBI single.
RSU tacked on a final run in the bottom of the fifth to seal the 3-0 victory. Skylar Nelson plated Gavin Mestas with a sacrifice fly to right.
Jordan Ewig (1-1) was nearly untouchable on the mound as he earned the complete game shutout with four strikeouts and only allowing three hits and one walk. The Cougar's Tyler Fischer (0-1) took the loss.
GAME TWO - RSU 18, CCU 2
The second game of the day was a much different affair as both teams got on the board in the first inning. Colorado Christian got their first run of the day and only lead early 1-0 in the top half of the frame. The run came in on a solo home run to right.
The Hillcats responded with five runs in the bottom half to go up 5-1. Jesse Holguin got things started with a RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Gavin Mestas. Holguin later scored on a passed ball. Victor Ceniceros scored Jonathan Soto and Prescott Horn with a RBI single through the left side of the infield. Joel Escalante scored on a pick off attempt at second.
The Cougars got a run back in the top of the fifth as they trimmed the deficit to 5-2. The run scored on an error by the second baseman.
RSU pushed the lead back out to 9-2 with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Holguin once again brought home Mestas, this time with a sacrifice fly to left. Skylar Nelson drove in A.J. Folds with a RBI double to right center. Nelson later scored on a passed ball with Jonathan Soto scoring on a wild pitch.
They tacked on a run in the sixth to go up 10-2. Folds plated Marcos Barrera with a RBI single to left center.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Hillcats exploded for seven runs and blew the game open at 17-2. Escalante got things started with a RBI single to left that plated Horn. Ceniceros brought in Escalante and Soto with a two RBI single up the middle. Ceniceros later scored on a bases loaded walk to Holguin. Nelson brought in Barrera with a sacrifice fly to center. Horn scored Holguin and Folds with a RBI single.
RSU added its final run in the bottom of the eighth to cap off the 18-2 rout. Carson Cheatwood plated Connor Womack as he grounded out to the second baseman.
Brett Karalius (1-1) earned the win going 5.0 innings with six strikeouts and only allowing three hits and two runs. CCU's Justin Estrada (0-1) took the loss.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with another doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
