CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (19-18, 12-11 MIAA) came up short 2-1 in the mid-week conference series finale to Missouri Southern (24-15, 14-10 MIAA) on Tuesday.
The Lions scored both of their runs in the first inning to go up 2-0. Both runs scored on a two RBI single to left.
RSU got on the board with a run in the bottom of the sixth to trim the deficit to 2-1. Skyler Nelson drove in Gavin Mestas with a RBI groundout to the shortstop for the Hillcats only run.
After giving up two runs in the opening frame six Hillcat pitchers combined to not allow another run by MSSU in the remaining eight innings. The Lions pitching staff likewise worked the final three innings without giving up a run.
However, neither teams lacked opportunities to score as RSU stranded eight runners, while MSSU left nine runners stranded.
Laif Hultine (2-2) earned the win, with Steen Lane (1) earning the save. Rece Parker (2-5) took the loss.
The Hillcats return to action on Friday, April 15 as they travel to Tahlequah, Okla. to begin a three-game series against Northeastern State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
