Hillcats Drop Game Two To NSU

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (19-21, 12-14 MIAA) dropped game two of the series 10-6 to Northeastern State (28-12, 17-9 MIAA) on Friday.

The RiverHawks opened the game scoring a run in both of the first two innings for a 2-0 lead. In the first inning, a run scored on a fielding error by the centerfielder. In the second inning, a run came in on a RBI single to right.

NSU exploded for four runs in the third inning to go up 6-0. Back-to-back bases loaded walks brought in the first two runs with the other two coming on a two RBI single thought the left side of the infield.

They tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to push out to 8-0. The first run came on a RBI groundout to third with the other run coming on a solo homer to left center. The RiverHawks added another run in the fifth on a RBI double down the left field line.

The Hillcats finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 9-1. Gavin Mestas drove in Marco Barrera with a RBI single to right field.

NSU responded with another run in the top of the sixth to go back up 10-1 with a leadoff solo homer to left center.

In the bottom of the seventh, RSU pushed across three runs to cut the deficit to 10-3. Joel Escalante crossed home on a wild pitch. Conner Womack later scored by stealing home as part of a double steal.

The Hillcats continued the comeback in the bottom of the ninth, but came up short 10-6. Ethan Rivera drove in Andrew Howard with a RBI single to left center and then Womack scored on a fielding error by the left fielder during the same play.

Jonathan Smithey (5-2) earned the win. Nathan Chase (1-4) took the loss.

The Hillcats will face off against NSU in the series finale tomorrow in Tahlequah, Okla. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
