CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (22-21, 14-14 MIAA) got the 7-2 upset win over Washburn (27-18, 17-11 MIAA) in the series opener on Thursday.
After both starters worked the first two innings without giving up a run, the Hillcats jumped on the board with an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Gavin Mestas scored the game's first run on a wild pitch. Jesse Holguin drove in Jonathan Soto with a RBI ground out to the second baseman.
RSU tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 5-0. Marco Barrera scored on an error by the first baseman. Skyler Nelson launched a two-run homer into the left field bleachers and scored Soto.
They added another run in the bottom of the fifth to push out to 6-0. Barrera plated Victor Ceniceros with a RBI single thought the right side of the infield.
The Ichabods got a run back in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-1. The run scored on a RBI single through the left side of the infield.
The Hillcats responded with one more run in the bottom half of the seventh to go back up 7-1. Prescott Horn drove in Soto with a RBI fielder's choice.
Washburn got one final run in the top of the ninth to set the final score at 7-2. The run scored on a RBI double to left.
Jordan Ewig (6-4) earned the win going 8.0 innings with five strikeouts and only allowing four hits. Casey Steward (5-1) took the loss.
The two teams will face off in game two of the series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
