ALVA, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (24-22) rolled to a 8-1 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State (20-27) in the regular season road finale on Tuesday.
The Hillcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning to get things started. Marco Barrera scored the first run of the game on a RBI groundout to first from Jesse Holguin.
RSU added three runs in the second inning to push out to 4-0. Jonathan Soto drove in Victor Ceniceros and Ethan Rivera with a two RBI single up the middle. Holguin later plated Barrera again, this time with a RBI single to center. They added another run in the third to go up 5-0 on a RBI sacrifice bunt from Ceniceros that brought in Prescott Horn.
In the top of the sixth, the Hillcats went up 7-0 as they pushed across two more runs. Skyler Nelson plated Soto as he uncorked on a two run blast.
The Rangers got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with one run and trimmed the deficit to 7-1. The run scored on a sacrifice fly to right.
RSU tacked on their final run in the top of the eight to seal the 8-1 win. Nelson again went yard, this time with a solo shot.
Jerry Davis (3-0) earned the win working 7.0 innings, allowing the lone run and only three hits with 10 strikeouts. Matthew Potts (2-3) took the loss.
The Hillcats return to action on Friday, April 29 as they play host to Northwest Missouri for the final series of the regular season. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
