BETHANY, Okla. – No. 2-seed Rogers State men's soccer (12-6-2) could not overcome an early 2-0 deficit as they fell 3-1 to top seed and host Southern Nazarene in a hard fought GAC/MIAA Championship on Sunday.
Â
George Robinson scored his ninth goal of the season in the game.
Declan Viljoen (10-6) made three saves while allowing three goals. Robinson,
Luke Morgan and
Grant King were all named to the All-Tournament team.
Â
The Crimson Storm wasted no time going on the offensive attack as they earned a corner kick just nine seconds into the game off the opening kickoff. They would later break the ice scoring the game's first goal in the 12th minute and would tack on another one just three short minutes later for an early 2-0 lead. The Hillcats refused to lay down though, as they kept fighting and eventually broke through the SNU defense as Robinson put RSU on the board in the 31st minute with a goal off a pass from Morgan to cut the lead to 2-1. They had an excellent opportunity to equalize in the 35th minute as
Sebastian Hernandez headed a ball off the right upright, but the Crimson Storm keeper punched the ball clear. SNU added one final goal late in the half in the 43rd minute to take a 3-1 advantage into the break.
Â
The final 45 minutes were a complete reverse of the first and saw much more defensive pressure. Rogers State managed to outshoot the Crimson Storm 5-3 in the period with SNU making two shots on goal to RSU's one.
Â
The Hillcats will now wait to see if they have done enough to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Selection Show will air Monday, Nov. 13 on NCAA.com at 6 p.m. CT.
