CLERMONT, Fla. – No. 1 Rogers State Softball (18-1) completed the six-game sweep at The Spring Games with wins over Central Region foe Winona State (10-5) and Northwood (8-5) on Saturday.
Â
GAME 1 – RSU 3, WSU 0
Â
The first game of the day was a low scoring affair with both starters working the first one and a half innings without giving up a run and scattering a combined two hits.
Â
The Hillcats got on the board in the bottom of the second with a run.
MaKayla Jackson reached first on a fielder's choice with one out, and was pinch run for by
Bobbi Leitha.
Jaylan Gibson brought Leitha in with a double to center.
Â
Both pitchers went back to work as they didn't allow any more runs over the next three and half innings, only allowing a combined four hits.
Â
RSU pushed across two final runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the 3-0 win.
Lana Gass led off the frame with a single to left.
Bridgett Morales then earned a seven-pitch walk to put runners at first and second. Gibson again came through with a bases clearing double to plate both Gass and Morales.
Â
Sara Llamas-Howell (7-0) earned her third complete game shutout of the season scattering two hits with seven strikeouts. Abbie Hlas (4-3) took the loss.
Â
GAME 2 – RSU 2, NU 0 (8 Innings)
Â
The second game was a classic pitchers duel. Through the first seven innings, both pitching staffs were absolutely dealing, as they combined to only allow five total hits and left four runners stranded with only three walks.
Â
In those seven frames, the Hillcats had three hits. In both the second and fourth innings, after getting a hit, RSU grounded into a double play to end the threat. The Hillcats only sent more than the minimum three batters to the plate once in regulation.
Â
However, with things still scoreless in the top of the eighth, RSU began to break through as they began the frame with
Lana Gass on second.
Bridgett Morales was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning to put runners on first and second.
Bobbi Leitha moved them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt to third.
Jaylan Gibson again delivered in the clutch as she pushed across Gass with a groundout to second for the second out. A
Callie Yellin double to center brought in Morales to give the Hillcats a 2-0 lead.
Â
In the home half of the frame, RSU was able to hold on as they only allowed the Timberwolves one hit and left two runners stranded to claim the win.
Â
Sara Llamas-Howell (8-0) earned the win coming out of the bullpen and working the final 3.0 innings, only allowing two hits with two strikeouts.
Jade Sanders was also outstanding, going 5.0 shutout innings with only one hits and three strikeouts. Hailey Leister (5-3) took the loss.
Â
The Hillcats return home to the Diamond Sport Complex on Tuesday, March 7 for a mid-week doubleheader against Arkansas Tech. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
