WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 18 Rogers State (1-0-2) battled to a hard fought 2-2 draw against rival No. 7 Midwestern State (2-0-1) on the road on Thursday.
Â
Two Hillcats found their way onto the score sheet with
Erik Hjertsson and
George Robinson both scoring their first goals of the season.
Declan Viljoen (1-0) made seven saves while allowing the two goals.
Â
In the first half, things began with both teams feeling each other out. The Mustangs just barely outshot RSU 9-8 in the opening 45 minutes, with five shots on goal compared to two. MSU had two opportunities to get on the board early as they peppered Viljoen with back-to-back shots in the 28th minute that were saved. As the period began to wind down, the Hillcats finally broke through to end the stalemate with
Erik Hjertsson finding the back of the net in the 41st minute to go up 1-0. However, just over 90 seconds later the Mustangs answered with an equalizer in the 43rd minute to send the game to the break tied at 1-1.
Â
The second half saw MSU get more aggressive on offense and limit RSU's shot opportunities as they took 17 shots to the Hillcats' four in the period. While the Mustangs upped their attack, their accuracy didn't follow suit as they were only able to get off four shots on goal. However, it was the Hillcats who made their shots count when it mattered most as three of their shots were on target. In the 78th minute, it was
George Robinson who put RSU back on top 2-1 after scoring on a pass from
Alex Fletcher. Unfortunately, five minutes later in the 82nd minute, MSU answered back again to tie things at 2-2 and force the game into a draw.
Â
The Hillcats will continue the four-game road trip on Saturday, Sept. 9 with a stop in Oklahoma City, Okla. to face off against another rival in Oklahoma Christian. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
