MARYVILLE, Mo. – Rogers State women's soccer (1-8-2, 0-3-2 MIAA) fought hard but couldn't get the ball to fall as they came up short 2-0 against Northwest Missouri (5-2-5, 3-1-2 MIAA) on Sunday.
Â
Despite giving up the two goals,
Tiffany Brittan made a season-high nine saves in the match.
Â
The Bearcats got off to a hot start as they were able to find the back of the net in the 14th minute to dash out to an early 1-0 lead. From there, things leveled out as NWMSU narrowly outshot the Hillcats 7-6 in the half, with RSUÂ taking five shots on goal to the Bearcats four. The Hillcats actually had the first opportunity to score in the eighth minute as
Alix Tirado-Negrete fired her first of four shots that would be saved.
Delana King,
Amaris Jasso and
Mackenzie Smith all joined Tirado-Negrete in trying to score the equalizer but were unsuccessful as the score remained 1-0 at the end of the first 45 minutes.
Â
In the second half, NWMSU took advantage of their offensive opportunities as they out the Hillcats 19-5 with seven shots on goal compared to four from RSU. They would seal the 2-0 win in the 66th minute as the ball found the back of the net on the third of three straight shots in the span of roughly 60 seconds. However, the Hillcats refused to quit fighting as Tirado-Negrete and Jasso along with
Valerie Hernandez kept trying to get shots around the Bearcat keeper until the final seconds to no avail.
Â
RSU will return home on Friday, Oct. 18 as they face off against Emporia State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
