HAYS, Kan. – Rogers State men's soccer (3-4-2, 3-0 GAC/MIAA) upset No. 21 Fort Hays State (3-3-1, 0-2 GAC/MIAA) with a 1-0 decision in a defensive battle on Thursday.
"This was a massive road win against a ranked team," said Head Coach Derek Larkin. "Declan was unreal in goal tonight. And a what great goal from Erik! Our men played their hearts out!"
Erik Hjertsson scored his second goal of the season with the game-winner. Declan Viljoen (3-4) made one save on 12 shots faced.
The Tigers went on the attack immediately out of the kickoff as they tested Viljoen early in the seventh minute, but the senior stood tall as he made a crucial save. From there things evened out as both teams began to apply defensive pressure. The Hillcats outshot FHSU 4-3 in the period with each side taking one shot on goal.
In the second half, the two teams began to find a small measure more of offensive momentum. This time it was the Tigers who outshot RSU 9-2 in the period, with both again taking one shot on goal apiece. However, it would be the Hillcats that made their shot count in the 60th minute as Hjertsson blasted a shot from the top corner of the penalty box to deliver the 1-0 victory.
The Hillcats will stay on the road on Saturday, Oct. 5 as they travel to Wichita, Kan. and face off against Newman. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
