CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State women's soccer (1-7-1, 0-2-1 MIAA) battled to a 1-1 draw with Pittsburg State (4-3-2, 0-1-2 MIAA) in the first-ever meeting between the two sides on Friday.
Â
"It was good to get our first point in league play," said Head Coach Chris Jones. "There in the final 10 minutes, we put them under immense pressure and created some great opportunities that we unfortunately didn't capitalize on and that was kind of the story of the night for us. I thought we played well though."
Â
Mackenzie Smith got on the scoresheet for the first time this season. Despite the one early goal,
Tiffany Brittan was phenomenal in goal for RSU as she made seven saves.
Â
The game got off to a lightning-fast start as the Gorillas scored on a cross into the box 70 seconds into the match. The Hillcats wasted little time responding as
Mackenzie Smith fired the equalizer in the 11th minute to level things at 1-1. From there, things devolved into a defensive stalemate as PSU narrowly outshot RSU 7-6 in the period with four shots on goal compared to three shots on goal.
Â
The second half saw more defensive pressure from both sides. Again, the Gorillas outshot the Hillcats 8-3 in the period with five shots on goal to one shot on goal. However, in the final 10 minutes, RSU found a flurry of offensive momentum but couldn't convert it into the game winning goal.
Â
The Hillcats will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 6 as they travel to Joplin, Mo. to face off against Missouri Southern. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
