Hillcats Earn Share Of GAC/MIAA Regular Season Championship With Road Win Over Ouachita Baptist

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Rogers State men's soccer (8-5-5, 8-1-3 GAC/MIAA) clinched a share of their second GAC/MIAA Regular Season Championship with a dominant 4-0 win over Ouachita Baptist (2-13-2, 1-10-1 GAC/MIAA) on the road on Saturday. This is RSU's first regular season title since claiming it outright in 2021.

"This was a great day for our entire team," said Head Coach Derek Larkin. "Our men played really well! Declan got us another shutout and Marcos had two goals and an assist. Marcos also had game winner on Thursday and Declan had another shutout. It was a great showing from our seniors for two big road wins to finish the regular season. I'm so proud of all our men!"

Brandon O'Rourke, Ashton Medina and Marcos Vasallo all found their way onto the scoresheet, with Vasallo scoring twice. Declan Viljoen earned the combined shutout in the net making one save with Casey Copenhaver coming in for the final eight minutes.

The Hillcats were in control from the opening kickoff as they outshot the Tigers 11-2 in the half with four shots on goal to one. RSU wasted little time getting on the board as O'Rourke fired in a shot from 10 yards out off a cross into the box from Vasallo to go up 1-0. Later in the 22nd minute, Medina got a hold of a ball that ricocheted off a defender and found its way into the net for a 2-0 lead.

RSU cranked up the offensive intensity in the second half, this time outshooting OBU 13-2 with all six shots on goal in the period. Vasallo scored his first goal in the 54th minute from 15 yards out off a pass from Louis Bassett. He then struck one final time in the 66th minute to secure the 4-0 victory.

The Hillcats enter the GAC/MIAA Tournament as the No. 2-seed due to a tiebreaker with Southern Nazarene and face off against No. 3-seed Fort Hays State on Thursday, Nov. 7 in Bethany, Okla.
