Hillcats Open MIAA Play With Win Over Newman In 11 Inning Thriller

WICHITA, Kan. – Rogers State baseball (8-3) used a three-run 11th inning to claim the 10-7 win over Newman (2-12) to open MIAA play with a bang on Friday.

The Jets jumped on the board first with a 1-0 lead in the first inning. A single to left scored the run from second.

The Hillcats tied it up at 1-1 in the top of third. Matthew Schure was hit by a pitch to start the inning. An error by the second baseman moved him to third with AJ Folds reaching first. Later, Gabe Russell drove in Schure with two outs.

Newman answered back with another run in the bottom half of the frame to go back up 2-1. Another RBI single to left plated the run. They added to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to push out to a 4-1 advantage. Back-to-back groundouts to second and short, respectively, brought in both runs.

RSU exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh to take their first lead of the day at 7-4. Schure got things started as he crossed home on a wild pitch. Ryan Tiger laced a triple to center field that scored Geovanni Blackshaw, Joel Escalante and Russell. Tiger later scored on an error by the first baseman. Ramon Torres capped off the inning with a RBI single to center that scored Jake Mitchell.

After getting two quick outs to start the top of the ninth, Newman got a runner on with a single to right center. A double to right put runners in scoring position. A double to left brought in the tying runs and forced extra innings with things deadlocked at 7-7.

After both teams went three up, three down in the 10th, Folds walked to lead off the 11th and later stole second. Escalante reached after being hit by a pitch. With one out, Matthew Delgado stepped to the plate and belted a two RBI triple to left field that plated both Folds and Escalante to give RSU a 9-7 lead. Delgado then scored on an error by the third baseman on the next play to seal the 10-7 win.

Noah Anderson (2-0) earned the win, working 4.0 innings in relief with three earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Octavio Sanchez (3) earned the save throwing the final inning, scattering two hits. Landon Riley was also solid out of the bullpen throwing 1.1 innings, only allowing two hits. Jared Newton (0-1) suffered the loss.
