RSU Comes Up Short In Pitchers’ Duel Against Gorillas

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (13-6, 5-3 MIAA) came up just short in a 3-2 pitchers' duel against Pittsburg State (15-5, 6-2 MIAA) on Sunday.

Through the first three innings neither starter allowed a run. RSU only allowed one hit over that span and left four Gorilla runners stranded. Likewise, PSU also only allowed one hit but left two Hillcats stranded.

The Gorillas broke the stalemate in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. A double down the left field line brought in the game's first run from second. A single to right scored the second run.

RSU responded in the bottom half of the frame with two runs of their own to tie things back at 2-2. With one out and the bases loaded, Richie Ponce laced a up seeing-eye single up the middle scoring both Joel Escalante and Matthew Delgado.

Both pitching staffs refused to allow another run over the next four innings. The Hillcats managed to hold PSU to just three hits over the course of those four frames and left five runners stranded. The Gorillas only allowed one hit and left two runners stranded.

After back-to-back singles to start the top of the ninth, PSU seals the 3-2 win with the go-ahead scoring on a throwing error by the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt.

Boston Dowd (3-0) earned the save with Cole Askew (1) earning the save. Andres De Leon (0-1) took the loss after allowing a run on four hits with six strikeouts over 3.0 innings.

The Hillcats will look to salvage a win in the series with the final game tomorrow. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
