No. 3 RSU Dominates Ichabods In Doubleheader Sweep

TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 3 Rogers State softball (20-4, 4-0 MIAA) swept Washburn (22-8, 2-4 MIAA) in dominant fashion on Friday.

GAME 1 – RSU 7, WU 1

After a scoreless first inning, the Hillcats jumped on the board with a 2-0 lead in the second inning. With Bridgett Morales reaching on a double down the left field line with two outs, Ashtyn Barrett unloaded on a 1-2 pitch with a two-run homer to left.

The Ichabods answered back in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 2-1. A double to left center brought in the run.

RSU exploded with four runs in the top of the sixth to push out to a 6-1 lead. Chelsea Spain laced a double down the left field line, scoring Mariah Belzer and Callie Yellin. A Paxton Donaldson fielder's choice later scored Morales with an error by the second baseman scoring Spain.

They tacked on one final run to seal the 7-1 win as Yellin launched a solo shot over the left field wall in the seventh inning.

Sara Llamas-Howell (10-2) earned the complete game win, only allowing one run on six hits with seven strikeouts. Jaycee Ginter (10-4) took the loss.

GAME 2 – RSU 2, WU 0

The Hillcats turned in a defensive masterpiece in the second game as Jade Sanders tossed her second no-hitter of the season on just 113 pitches. It was the first time the Ichabods had been no-hit since the first game of a doubleheader against Central Oklahoma on April 12, 2014, a streak of 478 games.

RSU pushed a run across in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. After McKayla Carney earned a seven pitch walk with one out, she scored on a fielding error by the shortstop.

They added a final run in the fourth to push out to a 2-0 lead. Abbey Rogers led off the inning with a double to right and was pinch run for by Bobbi Leitha. Brooke Nauman later drove her in with a sacrifice fly to center.

Jade Sanders (8-2) notched her eighth win, only walking two batters with four strikeouts. Sadie Walker (11-5) took the loss.

The Hillcats will look to carry their momentum into their trip to Emporia, Kan. tomorrow as they face off against Emporia State. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
