Hillcats Drop Mid-Week MIAA Contest To No. 8 Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. – Rogers State baseball (16-12, 8-9 MIAA) fell 13-4 in the second game of the MIAA mid-week series to No. 8 Missouri Southern (27-6, 14-3 MIAA) on Tuesday.

The Hillcats jumped on the board first with an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. After drawing a leadoff walk to start the game, AJ Folds moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jake Mitchell. Matthew Delgado drove him in with a single through the left side of the infield.

The Lions responded in the bottom of the third and took a 2-1 lead. A double to right scored the first run with a fielder's choice to third bringing in the other run.

RSU answered back in the top of the fourth to go back up 4-2. Ramon Torres got on with a single through the left side of the infield and later scored on a failed pickoff move to first. Jake Mitchell stepped to the plate with two outs and blasted a two-run shot to left that plated Folds.

Southern pushed across three runs in the bottom half to jump back in front to stay at 5-4. An RBI groundout to short allowed the first run to score with a triple to right center and a single to left bringing in the other runs.

The Lions broke the game open in the fifth with four runs to push out to a 9-4 margin. A double to right center scored the first run with a sacrifice fly to right scoring the second run. The final two runs came in on a double to left center.

They added two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to go up 11-4. A bases loaded walk and a RBI groundout to first plated the two runs.

MSSU tacked on two final runs in the eighth to seal the 13-4 win. A single through the right side of the infield and a fielder's choice to third brought in the runs.

Jacob Davis (3-0) earned the win. Nate Wohlgemuth (0-4) took the loss.
