Offensive Explosion Lifts RSU Over Southern Nazarene In Mid-Week Win

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (22-18) claimed the largest win in the 31-game series over Southern Nazarene (12-31) with a seven-inning, 16-0 victory on Tuesday.

After a scoreless first inning, the Hillcats busted the game wide open with seven runs in the second inning. After Gabe Russell earned a leadoff walk, Ryan Tiger blasted a two-run bomb to get things started. Matthew Schure drove in Joel Escalante with a single to left. A bases loaded walk of Matthew Delgado allowed Royce Tsumura to cross home. Russell plated both Schure and AJ Folds with a single to left. Delgado capped off the frame by scoring from third on a throwing error by the pitcher.

They added another run in the third to go up 8-0 as Folds plated Tsumura with a sacrifice fly to right.

In the fifth inning, the Hillcats hung another crooked number as they pushed across six more runs to take a 14-0 lead. A bases loaded hit by pitch of Folds brought in Tsumura. Delgado plated Schure with a single to third base. A bases loaded walk by Russell scored Folds, with Jake Mitchell crossing home on a wild pitch. Delgado later scored on a Tiger ground out to short. Escalante finished off the inning by driving in Russell with a single to center.

RSU tacked on two final runs in the sixth to seal the 16-0 win with Russell plating Schure and Mitchell Smith with a double down the right field line.

Christopher Spry (2-3) earned the win after a 6.0 inning shutout start, scattering three hits with five strikeouts. Matt Lintz was solid out of the bullpen, throwing a one-hit shutout seventh inning with two strikeouts. Oliver Wilson (1-2) took the loss.

The Hillcats will begin to close out the regular season home schedule on Friday, April 19 as they open a three-game series against No. 2 Central Missouri. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
