Rogers State Blanks Washburn To Advance To The MIAA Tournament Championship

EDMOND, Okla. - No. 12 Rogers State (42-10) punched its ticket to the MIAA Tournament Championship game for the second time in three years as they shut out Washburn (37-15) 4-0 on Friday afternoon.

This was the 16th shutout win of the season for the Hillcats and the third win over Washburn. Also, it was the second shutout for RSU against the Ichabods this year, after Jade Sanders tossed a no-hitter against them in Topeka, Kan. during the regular season.

The Hillcats started hot as they took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Kaylee Lyon hit a stand up, two RBI triple to center field, which allowed Abbey Rogers and McKayla Carney to score.

RSU scored again in the bottom of the fourth inning when Callie Yellin hit a towering, solo shot to straightaway center to lead off the frame.

They added another insurance run to seal the 4-0 win in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lyon hit a sac fly to center field that brought in Carney from third base.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Washburn got runners on base. However a ground ball to Lyon at third base ended the game as she fielded it clean and threw it to first baseman Bridgett Morales for the final out.

Sanders (16-3) earned the complete game shutout and was electric in the circle as she scattered two hits with seven strikeouts. Sadie Walker (20-8) took the loss.

RSU returns to action on Saturday as they take on the winner of Pittsburg State and Central Oklahoma for their a chance at a second MIAA Tournament Championship. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
