Second Half Offensive Burst Lifts RSU Over Ouachita For First Win Of The Season

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State women's soccer (1-2) captured their first win of the season with two second half goals against Ouachita (0-2) to claim the 2-1 decision.

"Give credit to Ouachita, they won their conference last year and for us to get better we have to play the best in the region," said Head Coach Chris Jones. "For us to comeback from a goal down and get the result is huge for us. I was happy to see us grind it out and get a win that wasn't necessarily pretty."

Hope Jensen and Brooke Hartshorn both scored their first goals of the season to lead the Hillcats to the win with Delana King, Alix Tirado-Negrete and Amber Arnold all picking up an assist. Marlou Frieling (1-0) was excellent in her first career game in goal as she made seven saves and only allowed the one goal.

It was defense heavy first half as RSU held the Tigers to just five total shots and only two shots on goal, compared to seven total shots and three shots on goal for the Hillcats. However, OBU got on the board first in the 19th minute as a freak deflection off an RSU defender in front of the goal allowed the ball to find the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead that held going into the half.

Both offenses came alive in the second half as they both managed to get off eight shots, with OBU firing five on goal compared to RSU's three on goal. In the 60th minute, Hope Jensen scored the equalizer, with assists from Delana King and Alix Tirado-Negrete, as she fired a shot from the top of the box through a crowd of defenders to find the back right corner of the net and level things at 1-1. It would be Brooke Hartshorn that scored the winning goal off a pass from Amber Arnold in the 67th minute to give RSU the 2-1 victory.

The Hillcats will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 14 as they travel to Searcy, Ark. to face off against Harding. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
