Hillcats Clinch Series With Doubleheader Sweep of Colorado Christian

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State baseball (7-1) clinched the series with a doubleheader sweep of Colorado Christian (2-10) on Sunday.

"Winning is hard and however many in a row you get, you'll take them," said head coach Chris Klimas. "Today's games were complete team wins. We had strong starting pitching, timely hitting and outstanding defense. Overall, I thought today we played two complete games from offense to defense to pitching."

GAME 1 – RSU 5, CCU 1

The Hillcats jumped on the board early in the first game with two runs to go up 2-0 in the first inning. With two outs, Andrew Ramirez drew a four-pitch walk and then advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. Andres Contreras brought him in with a double to center for the game's first run. Jackson Romero returned the favor as he traded places with an RBI double to center of his own.

RSU added two more runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead. After Ramirez reached on a fielder's choice, Contreras blasted a two-run home run to right field.

The Cougars got a run back in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-1. A fielder's choice scored a run from third.

The Hillcats added a final run in the fifth to seal the 5-1 win. After Ramirez earned his second walk of the day on a 3-1 count, Romero drove him in on a fielder's choice.

Colton Anderson (2-0) earned the win with a 5.0 inning start, only allowing one run on one hit with six strikeouts. Dylan Weddle and Landon Riley were excellent in relief combining to scatter one hit over the final 4.0 innings. Brady Ritzmann (0-2) suffered the loss.

GAME 2 – RSU 9, CCU 3

After two scoreless frames to start the second game, RSU again struck first with three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Andres Contreras doubled to right field and advanced to third on the relay throw. Andrew Ramirez plated him with a single to center. Blake Nichols earned a 3-1 walk and later he and Ramirez moved over to second and third on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch allowed Ramirez to cross home. Jake Mitchell then scored Nichols with a double to right center.

The Cougars responded with a run in the top of the fourth to trim the lead to 3-1. An RBI double to right scored the run.

The Hillcats tacked on two more runs in the seventh to go back up 5-1. Tyler Nelson led off the frame with a single to short. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second with a groundout to second putting him at third. Contreras was later hit by a pitch and proceeded to steal second to put runners in scoring position with two outs. Both Nelson and Contreras scored on a Ramirez single up the middle.
CCU got another run back in the top of the eighth to cut the lead down to 5-2 with a sacrifice fly to center.

RSU answered back by exploding for four runs in the bottom half to go up 9-2. Nichols led off the inning with a single to right. Romero then reached on a two-base throwing error by the third baseman that put runners in scoring position. Weston Peninger drove in Nichols with a single to center. Nelson brought in Romero with a single. A Carson Cheatwood double to the left field corner cleared the bases, scoring Nelson and Peninger.

The Cougars tried to mount a comeback in the ninth but were only able to push across one run to set the final score at 9-3. The run scored on a single to right.

Christopher Spry (1-0) earned his first win of the season with a 7.0 inning quality start, only allowing one run on six hits with nine strikeouts. Blake Johnson was solid out of the bullpen, only allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts in the final 2.0 innings. Saxton Sorenson (0-1) took the loss.

The Hillcats will look to complete the series sweep in the final game tomorrow. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
