CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State baseball (17-7, 7-4 MIAA) pulled off an incredible upset against No. 2 Central Missouri (18-6, 9-3 MIAA) with a stunning 4-1 win on Saturday afternoon at the RCB Bank Sports Complex.
"Everyone needs to take note of what Colton Anderson did today," said Head Coach Chris Kilmas. "He was a hero for us and was lights out on the mound. We had other heroes, such as Jake Mitchell hitting a big two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, which gave us life. We hit it well today, played clean for the most part, and I am just so proud of our ball club."
Known for their powerful offense, Central Missouri had scored three or more runs in every game this season until today. In fact, since the start of the 2022 season, this was only the second time the Mules had been held to one run in a nine-inning game.Â
After a scoreless first frame, UCM scratched across its lone run in the second inning as part of a double steal, with the run coming in from third.
Over the next three innings, both starters combined to scatter two hits with four runners left stranded.
In the sixth inning. Jake Mitchell put the Hillcats in front 2-1 with a towering two-out, two-run moon shot to left field that plated Andrew Ramirez, who got on with an eight-pitch walk to lead off the frame.
RSU secured the 4-2 victory with two more runs in the eighth inning. Mitchell laced an RBI single into left field, which allowed Weston Peninger to score. Tyler Nelson later drove in Mitchell with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.Â
Colton Anderson (5-1) earned the complete game win and was electric on the mound, scattering four hits while only allowing one run with six strikeouts and no walks. Jack Kreisman (1-1) took the loss.
The rubber match will take place back at the RCB Bank Sports Complex on Sunday, March 23. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.Â
