TOPEKA, Kan. - Rogers State baseball (21-11, 11-9 MIAA) took the series with a 2-0 win over Washburn (17-19, 10-13 MIAA) in an old-school pitchers' duel on Sunday.
"This was a big win at a really difficult place to win on the road," said head coach Chris Klimas. "Colton and Landon were outstanding, and probably something that might go unnoticed was the play of all three of our outfielders. Carson Cheatwood went gap to gap to take away extra bases on several occasions and Jake Mitchell robbing a home run early in the game really set the tone and gave us a lot of momentum."
After two scoreless frames to start, the Hillcats pushed across the game's only runs in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. Luis Fuentes got things started as he reached on an error by the third baseman. Tyler Nelson brought him in with a one-out double to right center. Carson Cheatwood put runners on the corners as he laced a single up the middle. Andrew Ramirez plated Nelson with a single to right.
Over the final six innings, both pitching staffs locked in and refused to allow another run to cross home. In that span, they combined to only allow six hits with 12 runners left on.
In total, the RSU defense only let eight Ichabods reach safely, and only two of those made it to third base.
Colton Anderson (7-1) earned the win after 8.0 shutout innings on the mound, scattering four hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Landon Riley (5) picked up the save in the final inning, allowing one hit with a strikeout. Caden Bressley (1-3) took the loss.
The Hillcats will close out the road trip with the series finale tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
