KEARNEY, Neb. - No. 11 Rogers State softball (28-11, 10-8 MIAA) split a doubleheader against Nebraska Kearney (19-18, 5-7 MIAA) on the road Sunday.
GAME 1 - UNK 5, RSU 2
The Lopers wasted no time in the first game of the day, pushing across two runs in the first inning. An RBI single scored the first run with the second scoring on a throwing error by the catcher.
UNK added three more runs in the second to go up 5-0 off a throwing error by the third baseman, an RBI groundout and an RBI single to right center.
The Hillcats tried to mount a comeback in the fifth, but were only able to bring in two runs to cut the deficit to 5-2. Brooke Nauman doubled to start things off, and later scored as Kaylee Lyon reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop. Abbey Rogers plated Lyon with a single to short.
Kalli Ulven (5-7) earned the win, with Madeline Janssen (5) picking up the save. Jade Sanders (10-6) took the loss.
GAME 2 - RSU 2, UNK 0
The second game was a classic pitchers' duel as neither staff allowed a run in the first five innings. Over that span, they combined to scatter seven hits and leave 11 runners stranded.
RSU finally broke the seal in the sixth inning as Callie Yellin launched a one-out solo shot to left to put the Hillcats in front 1-0.
They added an insurance run in the seventh to push out to a 2-0 advantage. Savannah Evans got things rolling as she laced a one-out triple to center. Brooke Nauman put runners at the corners as she beat out an infield single to third. Evans later scored on a Kaylee Lyon sacrifice fly to left.
Harley Culie (13-4) earned the win, throwing a complete game shutout and only allowing four hits with eight strikeouts. Madeline Janssen (3-2) took the loss.
The Hillcats will wrap up the road trip tomorrow as they travel to Hays, Kan. to face off against Fort Hays State. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
