Offensive Struggles Prove Costly for Women's Soccer in 2-1 Loss Against Newman

RSU dropped its first match to the Jets since 2020

CLAREMORE, Okla. — Rogers State Women's Soccer (4-6-2, 2-5-0 MIAA) fell to Newman (1-10-3, 1-6-1 MIAA), 2-1, on Sunday at Soldier Field. This marked the Jets' first win over the Hillcats since 2020.

RSU finished with a 21-15 advantage in shots, including 13 attempts in the second half, and put eight shots on goal. The Jets scored once in each half, while the Hillcats got their goal in the final minute.

RSU spent much of the first half in a scoreless match, but the Jets broke through in the 41st minute on a goal by Iveta Stefancinova assisted by Emma Kolbe and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Earlier, Eliza Naegle helped the Hillcats withstand the Jets' opening pressure, making saves in the sixth, ninth and 14th minutes as the Jets recorded six shots and three corner kicks by 13:29. RSU began to push back after Khari Carreno's shot in the 21st minute, then generated five shots from 23:50 to 32:53, including saved attempts by Bella Holland, Zoe Wehrman and Te Waiariki Read. The pressure continued with another Read shot saved at 36:11, a Hillcats corner kick at 37:38 and Anna Hibbard's saved attempt at 38:18, but RSU could not find an equalizer before the half ended at 1-0.

Taylor Mendez created RSU's first recorded chance of the second half at 52:14, but the Jets followed with a sequence that included shots by Victoria Sandoval, Katherine Wilson and Mya Campbell, the last saved by Eliza Naegle, before earning a corner kick at 56:43. Izzy Sandoval scored for the Jets at 58:42 off a Mya Campbell assist to make it 2-0. RSU responded with sustained pressure, recording six shots from 72:04 to 79:12, including a Kelsey Hogan attempt saved by Emma Lintecum and efforts from Taylor Colmo, Carreno, Holland and Cynthia Solis. The Hillcats kept pressing with shots from Carreno, Gabi Bedigrew, Mendez and Hogan around an 88:09 corner kick, and Bedigrew scored from Solis and Carreno at 89:47 to cut the deficit to 2-1, which stood as the final score.

Bedigrew scored RSU's goal and finished with two shots, including one on frame. Carreno recorded an assist and led the team with four shots. Solis added an assist and one shot off the bench. Naegle played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves.

RSU will look to snap a five-match losing streak next Friday at home against Central Missouri. Kickoff from Soldier Field is slated for 7 p.m.
