TYLER, Texas — Head Coach
Alex Latorre picked up his first win leading the Rogers State Women's Soccer program as the Hillcats (1-0-0) opened the season with an impressive 2-1 victory over UT Tyler (0-1-0) on Thursday at the Citizens First Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.
"I want to start by giving all glory to my Savior, Jesus Christ—in victory and in defeat," Latorre said after the victory. "I also want to give credit to UT Tyler. They are an excellent team led by a very experienced coach. Most importantly, I'm incredibly proud of our girls. They have been coachable, hungry to improve, and willing to learn new things. The way they have trusted the process and applied what we've worked on in training and throughout our preseason games led to this amazing victory. That speaks volumes about their character and the culture we're building. This is only one game, so we'll stay humble, keep working and continue elevating from here."
The match commenced with RSU gaining an early advantage through
Bella Holland's goal in the 8th minute, assisted by
Sophia Brandes. The Hillcats maintained the pressure, with
Lydia Smith and Holland both testing the UT Tyler goalkeeper, Robbi Curry, who made crucial saves to keep the scoreline close.
UT Tyler responded in the 26th minute when Danica Anaya found the back of the net, leveling the match. Despite multiple attempts from the Patriots, including saved shots by Katie Wong and Lily Moreno,
Calais Butts' solid goalkeeping for RSU ensured the period ended with the score tied at 1-1.
The second period began with significant action for RSU as Holland converted a penalty kick in the 59th minute, breaking the deadlock and giving the team a crucial lead. The Hillcats maintained defensive resilience throughout the period, with Butts making key saves against multiple UT Tyler attempts, including a notable save from an Ava Harris shot in the 62nd minute.
Despite continuous offensive pressure from the Patriots, including several shots on goal, RSU held firm and prevented any equalizing chances. The period ended with the Hillcats preserving their lead, closing the game with a 2-1 victory over UT Tyler.
Holland led the Hillcats' offense by scoring two goals on four shots, including the game-winning goal. Brandes contributed to the team's success with an assist, helping control the midfield. The defending MIAA Goalkeeper of the Year, Butts, was pivotal in goal, making eight saves to secure the victory. Additionally, freshman Smith provided a shot on goal, while
Khari Carreno,
Kelsey Hogan,
Lani Waddle and
Katie Fisher played the entire 90 minutes.
The Hillcats will return to action on Sunday in Alva against the Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers. Action from Ranger Soccer Field will take place at 6 p.m.
