WICHITA, Kan. - No. 12 Rogers State Men's Soccer (5-2-1, 1-1-0) bounced back against Newman (2-6-0, 1-1-0) with a dominant 3-0 win on Saturday. RSU improves to 16-5-4 all-time against the Jets.Â
RSU finished with a 14-4 shot advantage and put seven shots on goal while allowing one. The Jets earned seven corner kicks and took three shots in the second half, but the Hillcats kept the shutout intact and added two goals after halftime after scoring once in the first half.
Jake Mangan (1) put RSU in front in the 38th minute with his first goal of the season, finishing a chance set up by
Mario Lopez Ayuso for a 1-0 lead. Earlier, the Hillcats created several looks in the opening stretch, including
Louis Bassett's shot off the right woodwork,
Alex Fletcher's saved attempt and
Matthew Reed's effort over the top by the 14th minute. The half grew more physical in the middle stages, with RSU absorbing multiple fouls and yellow cards while the Jets were also booked. The Hillcats kept pushing after the goal, with
Devon Garza and Mangan each taking late shots, and RSU carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
RSU added two second-half goals to close out a 3-0 win, with
Mario Lopez Ayuso (2) scoring from
Gian Filizzola in the 69th minute before Reed (1) finished another goal in the 83rd minute. Earlier, the Hillcats created chances through
Miguel Madrigal, Bassett, Filizzola and Mangan, while
Tristan Miller made a save on Vincent Edgell during a Jets push that also included two corner kicks before the hour mark. The half grew more physical with multiple fouls and cards, but RSU continued to find looks, including a
Brandon O'Rourke shot saved in the 79th minute. After Reed's goal made it 3-0, the Jets earned three late corner kicks, but the Hillcats kept the shutout intact through the final whistle.
Mangan scored the game-winning goal and led RSU with three shots, including two on goal. Lopez Ayuso finished with a goal and an assist for three points on two shots. Reed scored an unassisted goal and recorded two shots. Miller (5-2-1) played all 90 minutes in goal, made one save and posted a shutout.
RSU will return to action next Saturday for Gold Star Veteran Family Appreciation Night against rival Northeastern State. Kickoff from Soldier Field is slated for 7 p.m.
