Rogers State University Athletics

 

The 2026 Distance After Dark field will bring 1,664 high-school and collegiate entries to Mohawk Sports Complex, an increase of more than 400 names over the 2025 results field. All six defending team champions and all six runner-up programs are represented, along with 38 athletes who placed in the top 10 of their respective races last year. The returning field includes defending champions Ryleigh Hodges of Metro Christian, Sam Cox of Rejoice Christian and Rogers State's Amy Morefield, while 2025 high-school champion Ava Cornelius returns as a University of Tulsa freshman.

1. Championship field
Six defending Oklahoma state championship teams, 13 state-podium squads and four reigning individual state champions headline the 2026 Distance After Dark field.

2. State champions stepping into college competition
Reigning state champions Ava Cornelius and Carter Gibson return to Distance After Dark one year later as college freshmen. Cornelius will represent Tulsa after winning the 2025 6A title, while Gibson joins host Rogers State after capturing the 5A championship.

3. Reigning champions return
Moore junior Dominic Matthias, the defending 6A champion, and Regent Prep junior Thomas O'Dea, the defending 2A champion, lead a high-school field featuring 27 returning OSSAA top-10 finishers.

4. Three championship sweeps
Regent Prep, Lincoln Christian and Bishop Kelley each swept the boys' and girls' team championships in their respective classifications last fall, and all six championship squads are represented at Distance After Dark.

5. Prague–Cascia individual rematch
Prague's Jocelyn Ward and Cascia Hall's Ella Stoermer meet again after finishing second and third in the 3A state championship, separated by one-tenth of a second.

6. Lincoln Christian depth
Defending 4A champion Lincoln Christian returns four girls who placed in the state top 10, along with its defending boys' championship program.

Additional Highlights Include:

• All six defending Distance After Dark team champions and all six runners-up are represented.
• Thirty-eight of last year's 60 individual top-10 finishers are entered.
• Twenty athletes who competed as high school seniors at the 2025 meet return wearing college uniforms.
• Among Oklahoma and Arkansas entrants, the field includes 42 state top-10 finishers, four individual state champions, six defending state championship teams, 13 state podium squads and 51 state-qualifying boys' or girls' teams.
• Featured returners include defending college women's champion Amy Morefield, defending high school champions Ryleigh Hodges and Sam Cox, Arkansas 6A bronze medalist Hattie Ray Beshears, and Oklahoma state champions Thomas O'Dea, Dominic Matthias, Ava Cornelius and Carter Gibson.

Every 2025 team champion and every runner-up is represented in the 2026 entries. Seventeen of the 18 teams that placed in the top three are back; the lone exception is Piedmont.

Three of the six championships were decided by 10 points or fewer:

• Wyandotte over Cascia Hall by three
• Jenks over Lincoln Christian by eight
• Oklahoma Christian over Mid-America Christian by 10

The girls 2A–4A race was nearly as close: Metro Christian, Cascia Hall and Prague were separated by only 13 points across the first three positions.

Four of the six 2025 individual champions are entered in 2026:

Girls 2A–4A: an almost complete top-10 rematch. Nine of the first 10 finishers return, including the entire top nine:

Cox defeated Billings by only 2.73 seconds. Seventh-place Jacob Gorton is also back at the meet, now entered collegiately for Southwestern Christian University. Thus, nine of the 2025 top 10 will be competing somewhere on the 2026 card.

Girls 5A–6A: a new champion will be crowned. The defending champion, Ava Cornelius, has graduated and is entered in the college race for Tulsa.

The leading high-school returners are:

• Hattie Ray Beshears, Har-Ber — 2nd, 17:49.38
• Charlotte Tangren, Jenks — 4th, 18:22.30
• Rubie Gross, Bishop Kelley — 10th, 18:54.77

That produces two angles:

• Beshears enters as the highest returning finisher.
• Tangren gives defending team champion Jenks a returning top-five athlete.

Lilith Johnson, sixth for Owasso last year, is also back at the meet as a Pittsburg State freshman.

Boys 5A–6A: significant turnover at the top. The first five 2025 finishers have graduated and are not in the 2026 entries.

Thomas O'Dea of Regent Prep is the highest returning high-school finisher after placing sixth in 15:54.18.

Carter Gibson, who placed seventh for Claremore in 15:57.85, returns as a Rogers State freshman.

With the first five finishers from 2025 no longer in the field, Regent Prep's Thomas O'Dea enters as the highest returning finisher in the boys 5A–6A race.

College Women: an exceptionally deep rematch. Eight of the 2025 top 10 are entered, including the first four:

Defending champion Amy Morefield leads a women's field featuring eight of last year's top 10 finishers, including 2025 runner-up Sienna Collins and Oklahoma Christian standouts Kinley Kite and Brooke Latham.

College Men: 2025 third- and fourth-place finishers lead the returners. Five of the 2025 top 10 are entered:

The expanded entry report adds Jacob Gorton to the list we previously prepared. I now find 20 members of the 2025 senior class entered collegiately in 2026: 19 recorded finishes last year, while Truett Joiner was a DNF.

The Thomas O'Dea storyline is particularly strong. He placed sixth at the 2025 Distance After Dark meet, then won the 2A state championship. He returns as the highest returning finisher from last year's Distance After Dark boys 5A–6A race.

Dominic Matthias is a major new addition. He did not appear in the 2025 Distance After Dark results but enters this year as the reigning 6A champion after running 15:04.9 at state.

Carter Gibson and Ava Cornelius both won Distance After Dark-to-state story arcs:

• Cornelius won the 2025 Distance After Dark 5A–6A race and then won the 6A state championship. She returns as a Tulsa freshman.
• Gibson placed seventh at Distance After Dark and then won the 5A state championship. He returns as a Rogers State freshman.
