Mitchell Sowerby begins his third season as an assistant coach for the Rogers State men's soccer team after completing a stellar four-year career as a defender for the Hillcats.
Â
During the 2017 campaign, RSU put together an 8-7-3 record with one of the toughest schedules in NCAA Division II. Sowerby helped the Hillcats total four All-Heartland Conference selections in Ellis Ashworth, Declan Fitzpatrick, Jake Simpson and Jordan Watson.
Â
In Sowerby's first season, the Hillcats advanced to the Heartland Conference Tournament for the first time in program history, finishing with a 10-6-3 record and 7-5-2 in the Heartland Conference. Sowerby coached All-South Central Region Second Team and All-Heartland Conference First Team selection Jake Simpson in Sowerby's first season on the coaching staff.
Â
Sowerby, a native of Newcastle, England, is the only three-time All-Heartland Conference selection in the program's history. He earned first-team honors as a sophomore in 2013 and was named second-team all-conference two consecutive seasons as a junior and senior. In his final two seasons, Sowerby earned NSCAA All-South Central Region honors, and he was a NSCAA Scholar All-South Region. Sowerby appeared in 70 games and started in 66, including every game in his final three seasons, and played more career minutes than any other field player in program history.
Â
Sowerby served as an assistant coach for the NEOFC 99 Girls Blue and White club teams, and he will serve as the head coach for the NEOFC 98 Girls, 00 Girls Blue, and 05 Boys Blue clubs during the 2016-17 season. In his time as an assistant, he directed all on-field training sessions for the Owasso based club teams and led the NEOFC 99 Girls Blue to a President's Cup championship before advancing to represent Oklahoma at regionals. The team also won the Heartland Invitational championship in Overland Park, Kansas.
Â
He holds a United States Soccer Federation National "D" License and F.A. Level 1 (England) coaching licenses. Sowerby graduated from Rogers State with a bachelor's degree in business administration in the spring of 2016.
