Hillcats Roll Past Brescia in Doubleheader

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State baseball team ignored the bitter cold temperatures, rolled up its sleeves and went to work to claim a doubleheader win over Brescia University (Owensboro, Ky.) Friday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex.

The Hillcats methodically went about their business in claiming 7-2 and 7-1 victories over the Bearcats. Ten different RSU players tallied at least one hit on the day. Shortstop Blake Kelley led the way with three hits to improve his batting average to .500 for the season.

GAME ONE

Brescia took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. RSU starter Grant Cosby hit Mike Lane with the first pitch of the game. Brett Hunt followed with an RBI single and Justin McCormick added another RBI single up the middle to give the Bearcats an early cushion.

The lead was short lived as Ryan Littlejohn belted a homer to left in the bottom of the first to cut the lead in half. Blake Kelley and Zack Hamby followed with rips to left to tie the game, 2-2. The Hillcats took the lead with a three-run third as Kelley and Ryan Salsbury delivered RBI hits.

Cosby (1-0) settled into a groove and didn't allow a run over his final five innings of work to earn the win. RSU added two runs in the seventh. Coby Wright doubled to start the inning and later scored on a single up the middle by Joe Faircloth. Mitch Guemmer ran for Faircloth and promptly stole second and third base before scoring on a grounder by Brandon Denton. Ryan White pitched a perfect seventh inning to secure the win for the Hillcats.

GAME TWO

Greg Speed walked to start the bottom of the first inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Littlejohn. Speed's run marked the ninth consecutive game the Hillcats have scored in the first inning this season. Travis Harold singled to start the second inning and scored on back-to-back singles by Salsbury and Steven Fields.

The Bearcats cut the lead in half in the third as Johnny Merril scored on an errant pickoff throw by RSU starter Randy Jones. However, the Cats blew the game open with five runs in the fifth inning. RSU sent nine hitters to the plate to stretch the lead to six runs. Wright belted a two RBI single to right field to highlight the rally.

Jones (1-0) earned the win after allowing only one unearned run in five innings of work. He scattered four hits and posted two strikeouts without yielding a walk. The game was called in the sixth inning due to darkness.

Rogers State (7-2) improved to 5-1 in non-conference games and will return to Sooner Athletic Conference play next week. The Hillcats' Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders with Doane College have been cancelled due to impending bad weather in the area this weekend. RSU will travel to No. 9 Oklahoma City Thursday to face the Stars in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
