CLAREMORE, Okla. - Oklahoma City's Brent Weaver proved to be a one-man wrecking crew as he propelled the No. 9 Stars to a 5-4 over Rogers State at the rain soaked Hillcat Complex Saturday afternoon.
Â
Weaver went 3-for-3 with a two home runs and four RBI. His two homers over the first three innings lifted OCU to an early 5-0 lead, which proved to be just enough. The Hillcats rallied for four runs before being shut down by Stars closer Brad Riddle.
Â
Weaver put the Stars on the scoreboard in the top of the second with an opposite field homer that just got over the right field wall. The rain and sleet began to fall in the third inning and quickly took its toll on the Hillcat defense. Corbett Thompson started the inning with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a pass ball. Thompson scored on an RBI groundout and RSU starter Shawn Epps looked as if he would avoid any further damage.
Â
Epps got Brandon Moss to pop up with two outs, but RSU left fielder Ryan Littlejohn lost his footing and could find the ball amongst the freezing rain drops. David Mann followed with a walk and the game was finally halted by the umpires due to the severe weather conditions.
Â
One hour and 15 minutes later, play was resumed and Weaver stepped to plate for his second at-bat. He belted a 2-0 offering from reliever Chris Graves over the left field fence to put the Stars on top 5-0. It would be the only mistake of the day for Graves as he held OCU scoreless over the final 4.1 innings while racking up eight strikeouts.
Â
Zach Hamby started the RSU comeback with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Cats added another run in the fifth when Randy Jones scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Denton. The Hillcats rallied for two more runs in the sixth off of OCU reliever and Claremore native Zac Coplon. Blake Kelley walked and scored on a double by Hamby. Travis Harold added an RBI single, but was left stranded at third when pinch-hitter Joe Faircloth struck out to end the inning.
Â
Riddle worked the final 1.2 innings and retired the Hillcats in order in the seventh to earn the save. Starter David Odquist returned to the mound after the rain delay to record the win for OCU with five innings of work. The ninth-ranked Stars improved to 12-1 on the season and kept their conference record unblemished at 4-0. Epps (2-1) lost for the first time as a Hillcat after seeing his day cut short due to the rain delay.
Â
Rogers State (7-3, 2-2) will look to rebound against the Stars on the road Sunday afternoon. OCU will host the Hillcats for a single nine-inning game in a make-up date from Thursday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. and the game will be carried live on OCU's athletics website www.ocusports.com.
Â
The second game of Saturday's doubleheader was postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date at the Hillcat Complex.
