BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. - The brand new trophy case in Bushyhead Fieldhouse is quickly filling up.

The Rogers State softball team brought home its second trophy of the spring by winning six consecutive games at the Dennis Gault Tournament at Avila University (Blue Springs, Mo.) over the weekend. The Hillcats enjoyed two run-rule victories and edged McKendree University 5-3 in the championship to collect the winner's hardware.

Coach Dawn Reed-Schultz's club improved to 28-4 on the season and capped off a banner week that included a win over No.1 Lubbock Christian.
GAME ONE (vs. Ottawa University)

Kelli Dunagan tossed a seven-inning shutout as the Cats clipped Ottawa University 2-0 in the tournament opener Saturday.

RSU collected a pair of runs in the top of the third inning as Chasidy Austin doubled and Dunagan ripped an RBI single to left. Dunagan allowed just three hits over seven innings while striking out nine. She went 3-for-4 at the plate while Austin added two hits and a run scored.
GAME TWO (vs. Bethany College)

The Hillcats tallied 10 hits to slide past Bethany College, 4-2 in Saturday's second game.

Dunagan cranked her fourth homer of the week and sixth of the season in the top of the first inning to give RSU a 1-0 lead. Lillian Nevarez and Katie Bointy roped back-to-back singles in the second to make it a two-run advantage.

Bethany tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third off RSU starter Jenny Johnson. However, Johnson shutout the Swedes the rest of the way to keep her perfect record intact. Nevarez put the Cats back in front in the top of the fourth as she singled and scored on an error. Dunagan added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI single to left field.

Johnson improved to 8-0 with seven innings of work. She scattered eight hits and fanned eight hitters on the afternoon.
GAME THREE (vs. Haskell Indian Nations University)

RSU scored five times in the top of the seventh to cap a 14-2 drubbing of Haskell Indian Nations University Sunday morning.

Haskell starter Nicole Bennett surrendered seven walks and seven hits and the Hillcats made each one count. Claremore sophomore Mandy Clark went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored to lead RSU. Marie Gaudet, Sara Walkup and Nevarez tallied two RBI apiece in the rout.

Johnson worked seven strong innings and allowed two runs, one earned, to pick up her ninth win.
GAME FOUR (vs. Graceland University)

The Hillcats made quick work of Graceland University in an 8-0 five inning run-rule.

Nevarez, Walkup and Randi Tyler all singled as part of a two-run second inning for RSU. The Cats added five runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to stretch the lead to 7-0. Bointy belted a three-run double and Walkup followed with an RBI triple to highlight the scoring. Nevarez singled to start the Hillcat fifth and scored the final run on a single by Bointy.

Dunagan dominated Graceland for five straight innings. The right-hander didn't allow a hit until the fifth and yielded just one walk while striking out 10. She earned her 17th win with the complete game shutout. Nevarez, Bointy and Walkup combined for six hits and six RBI.
GAME FIVE (vs. Hannibal-LaGrange)

RSU won its second straight run-rule shortened game with a 15-1 drubbing of Hannibal-LaGrange Sunday afternoon.

The Hillcats scored seven times in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Nevarez, Gaudet, Clark and Walkup each had multi-hit games for RSU. The game featured 15 errors, 10 committed by Hannibal-LaGrange. Johnson (10-0) allowed one run on two hits over five innings to earn her tenth win of the season.
GAME SIX (CHAMPIONSHIP vs. McKendree University)

The Hillcats scored five runs over the first three innings and held on for a 5-3 win over McKendree University to claim the tournament championship.

Nevarez walked and scored on a double by Dunagan in the bottom of the first to give RSU an early 1-0 lead. Back-to-back RBI singles by Nevarez and Gaudet in the second made it 3-1. Singles by Bointy and Megan Wood along with an RBI groundout by Walkup gave the Hillcats a 5-1 advantage after three.

McKendree answered with two runs in the top of the fourth as Amber Nikolauzyk and Kayla White delivered RBI singles. However, Dunagan held McKendree scoreless the rest of the way and allowed just one hit over the final three innings. Dunagan (18-4) tossed a complete game for the third time in the tournament ant scattered eight hits while striking out 11.

Rogers State (28-4) has now captured two tournament championships by winning the Dennis Gault Tournament this weekend and the Cowtown Classic in February. The Hillcats return to conference action Tuesday as they face Oklahoma Baptist at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the games will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
