EDMOND, Okla. - Rogers State earned its first win over a ranked opponent in dominating fashion with a 59-40 victory over No. 18 Oklahoma Christian at the Eagles' Nest Monday night in Edmond, Okla.
Â
The Hillcats scored the opening basket and never trailed to extend their record winning streak to six games. Senior Azzie Knox poured in a season-high 18 points to lead RSU to its fourth Sooner Athletic Conference win of the season.
Â
The Cats jumped in front, 18-9 with a flurry of buckets in the opening minutes. Kailan DeCamp cut the lead to one with a jumper to cap a 6-0 Lady Eagles run. However, RSU refused to surrender the lead and pushed the margin back to 28-21 at the break.
Â
The Hillcats opened the second half on a 7-0 streak and held a double-digit lead the rest of the night. The Lady Eagles had no answer for RSU's relentless pressure defense. The Cats forced 20 turnovers and finished with 12 steals. Sophomore guard Andrea Miles led the attack with three steals and 11 second half points. Miles finished with 13 points and Hunter Peterson added 10.
Â
Junior forward Brittney Kennedy was the lone bright spot for OC. She scored 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting, accounting for nearly half of the Lady Eagles offense. The rest of the team combined for only eight field goals as OC was held without a 3-point field goal on the night.
Â
RSU shot 49 percent from the floor and outrebounded the home team 32-25. The Cats outscored Oklahoma Christian 31-19 in the second half to post their second win in three meetings against the tradition-rich program.
Â
Rogers State (10-4, 4-2) moved into to fourth place in Sooner Athletic Conference standings with the victory. Coach Amy Williams' team will put its six-game streak on the line at home Wednesday night against St. Gregory's.
