Drovers Outslug Diamond Cats, 13-10

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma halted Rogers State's seven game winning streak with a 13-10 victory in the conference opener at the Hillcat Complex Thursday.

The Drovers pounded out 13 runs on 16 hits to take the first game of a three-game series. RSU rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning but was unable to muster any additional offense in the ninth.

Both teams plated three runs in the first inning, setting the tone for a high-scoring afternoon. Sophomore catcher Joe Manbodh crushed a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to give the Cats a 5-3 lead. USAO answered with a run in the third and regained the lead in the fourth. Luke Krobath and Brandt Lierle ripped back-to-back doubles down the left field line as the Drovers chased RSU starter Josh Walker from the game. Greg Ylda greeter reliever Cristian Baez with a two-run triple to put USAO in front, 8-5.

Coby Wright singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Luis Caraballo in the fifth. However, the Hillcat bullpen was unable to keep the Drovers in check. USAO tacked on three runs on four hits in the sixth and blew the game open on a two-run homer by Lierle in the seventh.

Ryan Littlejohn and Rob Rodriguez gave the Hillcats hope with a pair of home runs off reliever Brandon Dean in the bottom of the eighth. Littlejohn belted a solo shot over the scoreboard in left center and Rodriguez followed with a two-run shot down the left field line. Dean was lifted in favor of Caleb Martin, who promptly got Zach Hamby to pop out to end the threat and then retired the Cats in order in the ninth.

USAO starter Nate Hammons (3-0) earned the victory with seven innings of work. He allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits. Walker (1-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs, five earned, on eight hits in 3.1 innings on the mound. Martin was credited with a four-out save.

Greg Ylda led the Drovers with four hits and four RBI. Wright went 3-for-5 for the Hillcats while Littlejohn, Rodriguez, Mandbodh and Luis Caraballo tallied two RBI apiece.

Rogers State (7-2) will travel to Chickasha, Okla., Saturday to complete the series against the Drovers. First-pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
