CLAREMORE, Okla. - Oklahoma City University used the long ball to sweep Rogers State in a Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex.
Â
The seventh-ranked Stars belted six home runs in the twin bill. Lilly LaVelle's 3-run homer lifted OCU to a 5-2 victory in the opener. Five different Stars went deep in the nightcap as OCU posted a 12-2 run-rule victory.
GAME ONE
Â
RSU grabbed the early lead as Jenny Johnson singled to start the second inning and Marie Gaudet followed with a two-run homer. OCU starter Jenni Gaby was promptly lifted in favor of Ashley Wilburn, who shutdown the Hillcats the rest of the way.
Â
Wilburn held the Cats hitless over the final six innings to record the victory. LaVelle cranked a three-run bomb over the boards in left-center in the third inning to put OCU on top, 3-2. Mindy Crabaugh singled home Erin Slettvet in the fifth and Jen Davis plated Alicia Clifton in the seventh to reach the final margin, 5-2.
Â
Johnson was tagged with her first loss of the season for RSU. She pitched all seven innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on nine hits. Wilburn yielded just two walks with 11 strikeouts in the victory.
GAME TWO
Â
OCU scored all 12 of its runs off homers to win the nightcap, 12-2 in short order.
Â
Davis and LaVelle both delivered three-run homers in the top of the second inning off RSU starter Jackie Kragel. Slettvett and Melissa Moore added two-run dingers in the fourth to make it 10-0 in favor of the visitors.
Â
The Hillcats got on the scoreboard with an unearned run in the fourth as Johnson scored Lillian Nevarez with an RBI groundout. Crabaugh completed the Stars power display with a two-run job in the fifth off reliever Britney Harrison.
Â
LaVelle was one out away from completing a no-hitter when it was broken up by Megan Wood with a double in the bottom of the fifth. Wood's double scored Sara Walkup and Natalie Smith added a single for the only tallies of the game for the Hillcats.
Â
Kragel suffered the loss after being roughed up in 3.1 innings of work while LaVelle earned the complete-game victory.
