Softball Cats Fall to No. 1 Lubbock Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - No. 1 Lubbock Christian kept its undefeated record intact by sweeping Rogers State in a doubleheader Wednesday at Ann Lacey Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Alyssa Gutierrez and Jori Rodgers combined to throw a complete-game shutout for the Lady Chaps in the opener. A four-run fourth inning highlighted the 7-0 victory. After jumping ahead 3-0 in the nightcap, the Hillcats couldn't keep pace with the LCU offense. The Lady Chaps scored 10 unanswered runs for a 10-3 win.

GAME ONE

LCU posted seven runs over the first four innings and cruised to a 7-0 victory in the first game of the day.

Honda Rodriguez ripped a two-run single to right field in the top of the second inning to give the Chaps a 3-0 lead. Rodriguez added another two-run single as part of a four-run fourth inning.

Gutierrez and Rodgers kept the Hillcats' bats in check from start to finish. Gutierrez (14-0) allowed just two hits while racking up seven strikeouts over the first five innings. Rodgers tossed the final two frames to complete the shutout. RSU starter Jenny Johnson took the loss after allowing seven runs over four innings of work. Jackie Kragel pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the Hillcats.

GAME TWO

RSU scored three runs in the top of the second inning but it wasn't nearly enough as the Lady Chaps rallied for 10 straight runs to win the nightcap, 10-3.

Katie Bointy laced an RBI single down the right field line to give RSU its first run of the day. Megan Wood followed with a two-run triple to stake the Cats to a 3-0 advantage. However, LCU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and refused to let up. Ginalee Davis gave the Chaps the lead with an RBI double in the bottom of the third and Kelley Greigo added another run-scoring double in the frame.

LCU tacked on three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to reach the final margin. Wood tallied three of the Hillcats seven hits in the contest. Griego (12-0) picked up the win after allowing three runs on five hits over the first four innings. Johnson (12-7) suffered her second loss of the day and was tagged for five runs on seven hits over four innings.
