CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State pounded out 25 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Tabor College (Hillsboro, Kan.) Monday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex.
Â
The Hillcats made quick work of the Bluejays in the opener by posting a 10-0 run-rule victory. The Cats weren't quite as sharp in the nightcap, but managed to hold on for an 8-7 victory despite committing four errors.
GAME ONE
Â
RSU dominated the first game of the series with 10 runs on 12 hits over five innings.
Â
Joe Manbodh, Luis Caraballo and Ryan Littlejohn tallied three consecutive hits to start the bottom of the second inning. Brandon Denton and Coby Wright added back-to-back singles to right field later in the frame as the Hillcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
Â
Three straight RBI singles by Zach Hamby, Mandbodh and Caraballo highlighted a five-run fifth inning for RSU. Denton scored the final run after doubling in the fifth.
Â
Josh Walker (4-1) tossed four shutout innings to earn his team-best fourth victory. He allowed three hits and no walks while striking out two. Caraballo finished with three hits while Manbodh added two. Brad Zewe (1-2) took the loss for Tabor.
GAME TWO
Â
Although the defense was shaky the offense kept clicking for the Hillcats in the nightcap. A five-run fourth inning keyed an 8-7 victory and a series sweep.
Â
RSU trailed 2-1 after CJ Henrichsen laced a two-run double into the left field gap in the top of the third inning. However, the Cats answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and broke the game open with five runs in the fourth.
Â
Denton ripped a three-run homer down the left field line, his second of the season, to put RSU in front, 6-3. Wright followed with a single and later scored on a Bluejays' error. Joe Faircloth doubled and scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Â
A throwing error led to two Tabor runs in the fifth and the Bluejays got within one run when the defensive woes continued in the sixth. Kevin Phillips and Faircloth both had issues with in-between hops on the right side of the infield, leading to a pair of unearned runs. RSU reliever Jake Taylor managed to escape the inning with a groundout, leaving the tying run stranded a second base. He retired the Bluejays in order in the seventh to record his first save of the season.
Â
Jason Travis (1-0) earned his first win with two innings of relief. He allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits. Cristian Baez worked the first three innings for RSU, giving up two runs on just one hit. Denton paced the offense with three hits and three RBI while Wright, Hamby, Faircloth and Ryan Littlejohn each had two hits.
Â
Rogers State (20-10) has won 10 of its last 11 games and will take the next four days off before opening up a three-game series against York College (York, Neb.) this weekend. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Hillcat Complex.
