CLAREMORE, Okla. - The game duration was recorded at just under four hours but for the pitchers involved it had to feel like an eternity.
Â
Wayland Baptist outslugged Rogers State, 20-12 in the highest scoring game ever played at the Hillcat Complex Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers took the rubber match of the three-game series by swatting 23 hits and five home runs against five RSU hurlers. The Hillcat offense held its own with 12 runs on 17 hits, but it was not nearly enough.
Â
A six-run second inning led to the offensive onslaught for WBU. The Pioneers chased freshman Josh Phillippi from the game with six singles in the second frame. Reliever Sam Cornell managed to put one zero on the scoreboard in the third. However, a three-run homer by Courtney Williams in the fourth sparked another wave of runs.
Â
To their credit, the Hillcats showed no signs of quitting throughout the slugfest. RSU sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and scored six runs capped by a two-run homer by Rob Rodriguez. Blake Kelley cut the lead to 14-8 when he led off the bottom of the seventh with a deep fly to dead center.
Â
WBU kept coming with a home run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to squash any thoughts of an RSU comeback. Kelley drove home Tyler Harold with a double in the eighth to reach the final margin, 20-12. Kelley went 4-for-5 with five RBI while Rodriguez and Coby Wright added three hits apiece.
Â
Brett Cook, Franky Busani and Keith Martin each posted four-hit games for the Pioneers. Jason Kimzey (4-0) earned the win after giving up three runs in 2.1 innings of relief. Phillippi (3-4) took the loss. He allowed eight runs on eight hits in just 1.1 innings of work.
Â
The two teams combined to use 10 pitchers who yielded a total of 32 runs on 40 hits in the contest. The 20 runs scored by WBU were the most ever surrendered by the Hillcats in a single game.

Rogers State (27-17, 11-13) will travel to No. 1 Lubbock Christian next weekend for a three game series in Lubbock, Texas.
