Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 1 Lubbock Christian Takes Two from RSU

LUBBOCK, Texas - The top-ranked Lubbock Christian Chaparrals extended their winning streak to 16 games by claiming both games of a doubleheader against Rogers State Friday at Hays Field in Lubbock, Texas.

LCU scored seven unanswered runs to win the opener, 7-1, behind a dominate pitching performance from ace R.L. Eisenbach. A six-run fourth inning spurred the Chaps to a 12-4 victory in the nightcap. The consensus No. 1 team in the NAIA improved to 42-4 on the season and shrunk its magic number for clinching the Sooner Athletic Conference championship to two games.

GAME ONE

The Hillcats scored first but were unable to keep pace with LCU in the opener.

RSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Blake Kelley singled and scored on a double by Travis Harold. The lead was short lived as the Chaps answered with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third. Doubles by Tyler Johnson and Armando Dominguez in the fourth made it 3-1 and LCU put the game out of reach with four runs in the fifth. The Hillcats made two errors on the infield to aid the Chaps' cause during the four-run fifth.

Eisenbach (10-0) held the Cats in check all afternoon while keeping his perfect pitching record intact. He scattered six hits across seven innings with six strikeouts and just one walk. Randy Jones (2-4) suffered the loss for RSU after giving up three runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work.

GAME TWO

All-American Will Stramp clubbed to home runs to key a 12-4 victory for LCU in the nightcap.

Stramp ripped a grand slam to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Chaps a 9-1 lead and then added a two-run job in the sixth for good measure. LCU accounted for four of the five homers in the contest with Kelley delivering the only long ball for the Hillcats.

Tanner Rindels hit a two-run homer in the first inning as the Chaps jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Kelley cranked a solo homer in the top of the second before LCU blew the game open in the fourth. Stramp's first bomb of the day capped a six-run fourth frame. The Cats answered with three runs in the top of the fifth, but it was not nearly enough. An RBI double by Brandon Denton and a two-run single by Zach Hamby plated the final runs of the day for RSU.

Johnson followed Stramp's second dinger with a solo homer of his own to reach the final margin, 12-4. Jakob Cunningham (7-1) tossed a complete-game to record the win, allowing four runs on eight hits over seven innings. Sam Cornell (4-2) took the loss after surrendering nine runs on nine hits in four innings of work.

Rogers State (27-19, 11-15) lost for the fourth straight time and will try to steal the final game of the series from the Chaps Saturday afternoon. First pitch from Hays field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
