OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Rogers State reached the second day of the Sooner Athletic Conference softball tournament by splitting two games Friday at the Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City.
Â
The Hillcats easily disposed of fourth-seeded Oklahoma Christian with a 6-0 rout in the opening game Friday morning. RSU tallied five hits and capitalized on five errors by the Lady Eagles to move into the winners' bracket. However, the Cats were upended by an upstart Oklahoma Baptist team Friday evening. The ninth-seeded Lady Bison completed a 3-0 run through Day 1 of the tournament by posting a come-from-behind, 9-6 victory over the Hillcats.
Â
Saturday's slate of games were rained out and play is scheduled to continue Sunday at HOF. RSU is slated to play Northwestern Oklahoma State in an elimination game Sunday at 1 p.m.
GAME ONE (vs. Oklahoma Christian)
Â
RSU scored in each of the first three innings and Jenny Johnson blanked Oklahoma Christian in all seven frames to earn a 6-0 victory.
Â
Johnson helped her own cause with a two-out RBI single in the top of the first inning to give the Cats a 1-0 lead. Sara Walkup scored in the second and Lillian Nevarez raced around the bases in the third thanks to a pair of OC errors to extend the lead to 3-0.
Â
Natalie Smith and Nevarez ripped back-to-back doubles in the top of the seventh and Johnson completed the scoring with an RBI single to reach the final margin. Johnson (29-20) breezed through seven innings in the pitcher's circle, finishing with six strikeouts and just five hits allowed. Leigh Leonard (11-5) took the loss for the Lady Eagles.
Â
Johnson also paced the RSU offense with two hits and two RBI while Nevarez scored three of the Cats six runs.
GAME TWO (vs. Oklahoma Baptist)
Â
Oklahoma Baptist overcame a four-run deficit to post a 9-6 win over the Hillcats in the late game Friday.
Â
The Lady Bison scored nine unanswered runs to complete a surprise march through the winners' bracket. OBU posted a meager 6-20 record in conference play during the regular season, but managed to knockoff Northwestern, top-ranked Lubbock Christian and RSU in an eight-hour span Friday.
Â
The Hillcats took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Megan Wood swatted a three-run double off the fence in center field. Marie Gaudet singled and scored in the bottom of the third and RSU appeared to be firmly in control with a 4-0 advantage.
Â
However, the OBU bats came to life in the fourth with four straight singles to open the inning followed by a pair of RBI ground outs. When the dust had settled the Lady Bison had taken a 5-4 lead. Jayme Boyer expanded the gap with a two-run homer in the fifth and scored on a single by Sonya Beach in the seventh to make it 9-4.
Â
Nevarez cranked a two-run home run for the Cats in the bottom of the seventh but the rally fell short. Johnson (29-21) suffered the loss after giving up eight runs, seven earned, in six innings of work. Amanda Hanner earned the win with four innings of work out of the bullpen.
