Soccer Cats Drop Season Opener at NSU, 2-1

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - A pair of late goals spoiled Rogers State's bid to open the season with a victory as the Hillcats dropped a 2-1 decision to Northeastern State Friday evening in Tahlequah.

Sergio Guerra put the Cats in front when he converted a penalty kick in the 37th minute and sent RSU into the half with a 1-0 advantage. The lead would hold until 79th minute when Justin Cleland banged home a goal off the far post to knot the game at 1-1.

The RiverHawks completed the comeback when Sambo Claros scored on a breakaway with less than four minutes to play in regulation. NSU outshot the Hillcats, 9-2 in the second period. RSU goalkeeper Sean Surridge tallied three second half saves while his counterpart Brendon Lindsay deflected the Hillcats lone shot on goal after halftime.

Rogers State (0-1) failed to win its season opener for the first time in three years. The Hillcats will host Bacone College for their home opener Monday night at Soldier Field in Claremore. The women's match is slated for 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.
