CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State men's soccer team kept its record winning streak alive with a 3-1 victory over Ottawa University Sunday at Soldier Field.
The Hillcats won their eighth consecutive match, doubling the longest winning streak for the program entering the 2009 season. Sophomore Henrique Sousa broke a scoreless tie in the 34th minute when he slid a shot in past Ottawa goalie Derick Allen, off the right post and into the left side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Des Fitzgerald beat the Ottawa goalie to a ball and chipped it past him to make it 2-0 in favor of the Hillcats at the half. The goal capped off an incredible week for Fitzgerald who finished with seven goals in three games.
Ottawa's Zac Huffman pulled the Braves back to within one when he rebounded a shot off the crossbar and drove it through in the 58th minute. However, RSU's Matt Longaberger responded with a perfect shot from the middle of the field that sailed high and out the reach of Allen for the final goal of the match.
Allen and RSU goalie Sean Surridge recorded four saves apiece as the Hillcats outshot the Braves, 16-12.
Rogers State (8-1) will open Sooner Athletic Conference play on the road this week at Wayland Baptist Tuesday and at Oklahoma City Sunday.
