CLAREMORE, Okla. - Ottawa University spoiled Rogers State's plans for a perfect September with a 4-0 victory over the Hillcats Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field in Claremore.
The Braves took advantage of a shorthanded RSU roster with a fast paced attack. Ottawa used 23 players in the match while the Hillcats played only three subs. The loss snapped a 7-0 start to the season for RSU, the best in school history. It also marked just the third time in three seasons the Cats were beaten on their home field.
Kelsey Hanna put the Braves on the scoreboard with a putback goal in the 21st minute after RSU goalie Bailey Lynn made a nice leaping deflection. Whitney Bowen chipped in a second goal right before the half on a cross from Stephanie Segura. Sheridan Horner made it 3-0 Braves with header in the 53rd minute and Segura added her second goal of the match with less than two minutes remaining.
Lynn recorded seven saves as the Braves outshot the Hillcats, 21-15. Ottawa goalkeeper Lauren Piel posted eight saves to record the shutout. Ottawa improved to 5-4 on the season with the win and should inch closer to a Top 25 ranking after receiving votes last week.
Rogers State (7-1) will hit the road to open Sooner Athletic Conference play this week with games at Wayland Baptist Tuesday and at Oklahoma City Saturday.
