CLAREMORE, Okla. - Senior Matt Kellogg played all 40 minutes, tying the single game scoring record with 32 points in the Rogers State men's basketball teams 101-92 victory over Huston-Tillotson on Monday night at the Claremore Expo.
"Matt (Kellogg) could be one of the best shooters I have ever coached," Head Coach Justin Barkley said. "His hard work has paid off. He really came through for us tonight."
The Hillcats were shot handed on the night with only seven players seeing time on the court. Senior Deveric Taylor saw 37 minutes of playing time in his season debut after rehabbing a preseason injury. He chipped in a career high 29 points.
"I can't say enough about the guys who finished the game," Head Coach Justin Barkley said. "I extremely proud of the way they persevered, it wasn't pretty but we got it done."
The Rams opened the game with a 13-2 run. The Hillcats battled back, tying the score with 11:45 to play in the half with a bucket from long distance by junior Joey Twilley. He had a career high 21 points on the night.
The score was knotted up seven times in the first half with the Hillcats claiming a 52-49 lead going into the locker room at the break.
The teams traded buckets to start the second half but an 8-0 run by the Hillcats, capped off by a conventional 3-point play by Taylor, gave RSU its first double-digit lead of the night at 85-74.
The Hillcats held onto the lead for the remainder of the evening, leading by as many as 16 points.
Senior Chris Francis joined Kellogg, Taylor and Twilley in double figures, posting 11 point.
The Hillcats shot 50 percent from behind the arc and 75 percent from the charity stripe while holding the Rams to 29 percent from 3-point range.
The Hilcats (2-1) are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 13 as they host Southeastern Oklahoma State University at 4 p.m. The game will be carried live on RSU Public Television and RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
