SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. - The Rogers State women's basketball team's comeback fell short at John Brown on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Eagles slipped past the Hillcats 65-63 at Bill George Arena.
Angie Criner hit a 3-pointer with 33 seconds remaining in the game to knot the score 63-63. Kortni Kendrick converted a layup and got fouled on the way down to give JBU a 65-63 advantage with seven seconds to play. Kendrick missed the bonus shot and Criner scooped up the rebound. The Jenks, Okla. native dribbled down the court and took the final shot from the top of the arc. The ball ricocheted off the rim at the buzzer.
Criner led the Hillcats with 20 points. Senior Candice Stewart followed with 16 points and Cortney Crockett rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. All three of the double-figure scorers contributed nine boards.
The Hillcat women open the game slow. JBU used a 7-0 run to jump out to a 12-4 lead. Andrea Miles snapped the Golden Eagles run with steal and a layup. The Dallas, Texas native's bucket sparked a 14-1 run to give the Hillcats their first lead of the game. JBU battled back in the final minutes of the half. Freshman Kami Garrison added a bucket at the buzzer to give the Golden Eagles a 25-21 advantage at intermission.
The Hillcats struggled from the free throw line converting 4-of-12 in the second half. They shot an abysmal 25-percent from behind the arc and 34-percent from the field. JBU shot 84-percent from the charity stripe and 42-percent from behind the arc.
Rogers State (7-4, 1-3) will break for the holidays and return to the hardwood on Jan. 1 at No. 2 Oklahoma City University. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM and rsuhillcats.com.
