Softball Cats Enjoy Saturday of Victories

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team earned three wins Saturday on the second day of the first ever Border War Tournament in Claremore.

The Hillcats clipped Kansas Wesleyan, 6-3 in the early game Saturday morning. RSU made quick work of Culver-Stockton with an 8-0 run-rule victory and edged Tabor College with a 6-5 decision in the finale. The Cats completed the weekend with a 5-1 record as the host team.

GAME ONE (vs. Kansas Wesleyan)

The Hillcats broke free from a 3-3 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against Kansas Wesleyan.

Freshman Jodi Patterson led off the inning with a solo home run to left field. Ashlee Dillman made it a two-run game when she stole home and Katrina Loy scored the final tally on an RBI single by Ashlie Fauchier.

RSU led 3-1 after the first two innings, but the Coyotes wouldn't go away. KWU pushed a run across in the fifth with a two-out double by Denise Hernandez and tied the game with an RBI single by Kris Partin in the top of the sixth. Tye Coats pitched around a leadoff single in the seventh to preserve the victory.

Coats (19-12) earned the win with seven innings of work. She allowed three runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Megan Michel took the loss for KWU. Fauchier notched three of the Hillcats' nine hits in the contest.

GAME TWO (Culver-Stockton)

Taryn Hernandez served as a one-woman wrecking crew against Culver-Stockton. The junior transfer belted two home runs and pitched a dominating five-inning shutout.

Hernandez and freshman Linsey Curtis swatted back-to-back homers as part of a four-run first inning. Hernandez added a solo homer in the third and RSU halted the game at 8-0 with two runs in the fifth.

Hernandez allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out four. Danielle Kaltmayer suffered the loss for the Coyotes. Katie Bointy tallied three hits in the game while Curtis picked up three RBI.

GAME THREE (vs. Tabor College)

The Hillcats completed a perfect Saturday showing while allowing their reserves to obtain some key game experience against Tabor College.

RSU let a three-run lead slip away when Tabor scored four runs in the top of the sixth. However, the Cats answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame and held on for a 6-5 victory.

Patterson was hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored the tying run on an error. Hernandez singled and scored the decisive run on the back end of a double steal. Bointy, RSU's regular third baseman, received her first pitching start and allowed just one run over the first three innings.

Hernandez (9-2) worked the final four frames to earn the victory. She allowed four unearned runs on four hits. Roxanne Rodriguez was tagged with the loss for Tabor after giving up six runs on six hits.

Rogers State (28-14) will take Sunday off before hosting the University of Science and Arts Monday. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 4 p.m. at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore.
